Hello!  Welcome to Teach, Write, Cook!  I’m Amy, a graduate student living in beautiful Madison, Wisconsin.   I started this blog as a way to help myself achieve my New Year’s resolutions aimed at living a healthier and more balanced life.

Here’s the beginning of my story of my journey toward a healthy, more balanced life:

For the first few years of graduate school in a rigorous Ph.D. program, I let school and a part-time job rule my life.  I lived off of take-out, vending machine snacks and soda, and convenience foods, and I didn’t think I had time to work out.  In the process, I gained about 30 pounds, developed fairly severe GI issues due to stress and poor eating, and generally felt like I was trudging my way through life.

In the fall of 2008, I finally had enough.  I decided that I needed to prioritize my health and happiness.  I tried several different diet plans with no avail, until I tried the South Beach Diet.  I started out following it strictly, but had the most weight loss success when I decided to loosely follow it, focusing primarily on eating vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean protein, while not declaring anything completely off limits.  Within six months, I had lost 25 pounds and felt a lot more like myself physically and emotionally.

Since then, I’ve been eating fairly healthy and working out somewhat regularly, but this year, I want to commit to living a healthier, happier, and more balanced life in 2011 and beyond.
